Staff Update 29/05/14

Work has continued all day, the Mackintosh Building is now cleared and all Departments have been relocated.  The GSA will reopen tomorrow, Friday 30th May at 10am as planned.

All Staff Briefing
The All Staff Briefing will take place in the Reid Auditorium at 9am tomorrow.

Mackintosh Building Update
Work underway on Western Gable of The Mackintosh Building
Tomorrow at 8am work will begin in partnership with Historic Scotland, on carrying out an early phase of reconstruction of the Mackintosh Building. They will begin deconstructing and laying aside a small section of the uppermost part of the western gable of the Mackintosh Building for conservation. Experts from the Digital Design Studio at the GSA have laser scanned the Western gable and created a 3D plan. Specialists from Historic Scotland have now marked up the stones in line with this plan.

The work will be undertaken by specialist stone masons and the stones will be conserved and protected at Historic Scotland's Glasgow Cathedral Depot, for reinstatement at a later date.

Press and Media
There continues to be significant interest in the GSA at this time.  Staff are reminded to follow the standard GSA protocols and direct any media enquiries through Lesley Booth (press@gsa.ac.uk ext. 1442).  As students return tomorrow, we need to be really sensitive to the way we communicate, both with them and externally to the world and please be aware that there may well be a press presence around the site.

HR Office
The HR service to staff continues to be available and from Friday 30th May will be located in Rose St. HR staff are also on hand to provide much support and assistance to staff as required and are putting in place further professional and confidential support available to us all over the coming weeks and months.

Relocation
Please note that in a change to previous updates, Continuing Education will from tomorrow be sited in the Library, Floor 1, Quiet Study Space and not the Barnes Building. Sandi Galbraith, John Martin and Michael McGaughlin can be found in project Space 2, Reid Building, 1st Floor.

Road Closures
Renfrew Street between Scott Street and Dalhousie Street and Scott Street between Sauchiehall Street and Renfrew Street will remain closed for the foreseeable future.  Staff should note that they should to carry their staff card or other photo identification at all times when on the GSA campus and continue to check their email, the GSA website and social media for updates as they happen.  You can refer to the website here for updated information that has been sent to students. We look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow, Friday 30th May.

Staff are reminded that if they are engaged in the recovery of items from the Mackintosh Building they should continue to take extreme care when in the Building and obey all Health and Safety briefings and restricted themselves to the East Wing of the Building.

Due to the sheer hard work and dedication of staff from all part of the School we are on track for the reopening of the School on Friday 30th May.

We continue to make significant progress a number of areas as we continue to normalise operations following last Friday's fire in the Mackintosh Building.  The site continues to be under the control of Scottish Fire and Rescue and remains closed to all staff other than those specifically requested to attend meeting or assist in the removal of items.

And finally some positive news from the Scottish Government who earlier today announced they would support the GSA to establish artist’s bursaries for those who have lost work in the Mackintosh fire.  They have also generously pledged to match up to £5m any monies raised by The Glasgow School of Art in response to the Mackintosh fire.

We anticipate we will continue to make significant progress in normalising the operation of the School and look forward to seeing everyone on Friday 30th May.  Staff should continue to check their email, the GSA website and social media for updates as they happen.

Update 26/05/14

Staff have been on site all day working tirelessly to continue to both normalise operations and continue with the systematic removal of items from the Mackintosh Building.

Significant progress has been made including:

  • Completion of the photographic record of each studio space
  • The removal of student work within the West wing of Mackintosh Building to the East wing
  • Labelling of all student work for removal to McLellan Galleries
  • Agreement of new locations across the campus for administrative offices  currently based within the Mackintosh Building with a phased plan of relocation ensuring services are operational for Friday 30th May
  • On-going removal of the GSA archives and collection for conservation where required and storage off-site
  • Further planning and implementation (where possible) of plans for assessment, degree show and graduation
  • Retrieving artefacts from the West wing of the Mackintosh building
  • Agreeing the hand-over of the site from Scottish Fire and Rescue to GCC Building Control

Each of us has been inundated with offers of support - moral, financial and general or specialist assistance.  We really want to acknowledge and harness this support which has come not only from across the City and Scotland but worldwide and Alan Horn and the Development are gearing up to do this.  Any offers of support can be emailed over to Alan (a.horn@gsa.ac.uk) who will be able to follow these up on behalf of the School in addition to your own personal replies.

The School will remain closed to both staff and students until Friday morning as previously advised with the following exceptions:

  1.  Staff due to attend Progression Boards and Internal Assessment Board should do so as advised
  2. Staff required/asked to assist in specific tasks related to the current situation
  3. 4th year class reps who will be meeting with Professor Tom Inns and Sam De Santis to feed back student concerns

All staff and students are reminded that they should carry their staff or student card with them at all times.

30 Hill Street will remain open from 10am daily for anyone requiring counselling and support.  Students and staff can either drop in or phone 0141 353 4787 to speak with someone.

It is a little over 78 hours since the fire.  It has had a massive impact to students, staff and the wider community but, over the past few days, we have worked hard to develop and implement plans to ensure the School can reopen and continue to operate as normally as possible.  This work is ongoing in what is a complex and rapidly changing situation.  Students and staff should check their email, the GSA website and social media for updates as they happen.

Staff Update 25/05/14

Staff from across the School have been working tirelessly today to progress the GSA’s response to the Mackintosh Building fire. The site currently remains under the control of Scottish Fire and Rescue and this is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

We are currently undertaking a systematic plan of action which will see the contents of the Mackintosh Building documented and removed as the site is handed back to the School. We anticipate this to be completed by Friday 30 May when the School will reopen.

It was fantastic to see so many colleagues this morning who came to help with the salvage operations. This provided a great opportunity to meet staff and reflect on what has happened at the GSA over the last couple of days. When we met we explained that due to the rapidly changing situation we did not need the help of everybody who had volunteered this morning. After a day of further planning we now have a clearer idea of the help that might be needed over the next couple of days. If you are available please email k.hollands@gsa.ac.uk with your contact details (phone number) and when you might be available. She will then be in touch with you should we need you.

Please note all staff taking part in retrieval activities will require their identfication to gain access to the site - their Staff Card and/or driving licence or passport. Staff will also be issued with PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and given training before accessing the site.

All buildings on the GSA estate will remain closed until Friday morning. Some of you have been asked to come in for specific meetings and activities. This will take place as planned and you should report to the relevant location or the Reid Building.

While we appreciate that many of you are anxious about personal items please be assured that these are secure within buildings and will be available for collection on Friday.

The support for both students and staff will continue to be available. Daily, from 10am, 30 Hill Street will be open for anyone requiring counselling and support. Students and staff can either drop in or phone 0141 353 4787 to speak with someone.

We will continue to update you over the next few days.

24/05/14

Over the past 24 hours the School has been responding to the impact of the fire in the Mackintosh Building.  The Mackintosh Building and surrounding area remains a restricted zone and the School under the control of the Fire Service and the School and all its buildings will remain closed until 10am on Friday 30th MayPrior to the re-opening of the buildings outwith the Mackintosh there will be an all staff meeting in the GFT. We will confirm the date and time early next week once we are have a clearer view of the situation.

From Friday the School will start to operate and as far as possible the life of the School will continue as usual.  Our ability to do this is due, in no insignificant part, to the amazing work of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who went significantly beyond the call of duty to not only tackle the fire but very clearly fought it.  To them we owe our deep gratitude.

Staff from across the School have been working around the clock to ensure the GSA can become fully operational as soon as possible.  As we move into the next phases of managing the impact of the fire, we remain committed to maintaining this momentum. Over the next couple of days we would welcome any help that staff may be able to offer. Tomorrow we are beginning the process of moving items out of the Mackintosh Building and if you are available to lend a hand we would be appreciate if you could report to Rose Street at 10am.

We are currently working on the relocation of Departments (Registry, Human Resources, Student Counselling, Finance, Continuing Education, GSA Enterprises, School of Fine Art staff) which are currently based within the Mackintosh Building.  Further information on the new location for these Departments will be issued as soon as it is known.

The support for both students and staff will continue to be available.  Daily from 10am, 30 Hill Street will be open for anyone requiring counselling and support.  Students and staff can either drop in or phone 0141 353 4787 to speak with someone.

For your information we have issued an updated communication to students.  This can be found at this page.
