Toby Webster is one of the UK's leading gallerists, and Director of influential gallery The Modern Institute. Born in Glasgow, Webster worked in London for the designer Ron Arad before studying Environmental Art at the GSA, graduating in 1993. After graduating, Webster joined the committee at Transmission Gallery, and worked as a curator at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in Glasgow, as well as the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London.

Webster established The Modern Institute in 1998, in partnership with former Tramway and current Van Abbemuseum Director, Charles Esche, and writer and curator Will Bradley. The gallery was set up primarily to support Scottish artists, and is now recognised as a gallery of international repute.

The Modern Institute represents 42 of the worlds leading contemporary artists, many of whom studied at The Glasgow School of Art, including Turner Prize winners Martin Boyce (2011), Richard Wright (2009) and Simon Starling (2005) along with Jim Lambie, Toby Paterson, Cathy Wilkes and Sue Tompkins and Haley Tompkins. Other Modern Institute artists include Jeremy Deller, Thomas Houseago, Eva Rothschild and Monika Sosnowska.
