Helen Kalmijn

Helen studied at Bristol and Exeter College of Art where she gained a BA Hons degree in Fine Art. She joined GSA in 1993 to help establish a Casting Workshop initially within the Environmental Art Department. Prior to this, she worked at Powderhall Bronze Foundry in Edinburgh and Chalk and Grime in Edinburgh as a freelance mould maker whilst also continuing with her own practice. Over the years, at GSA, she has developed the range of materials and processes available to students within the workshop. She is fascinated by materials and processes and the potential they have for creative discoveries.

The ethos of the workshop is one of experimentation: students are encouraged to gain an understanding of a materials potential and it’s limitations at first hand. For this reason the workshop stocks a library of material samples and information sheets for the students as reference.

Outwith GSA, she has run numerous educational workshops and she continues to work as a freelance artist/mould maker.
