Hugh Watt

Hugh has been a staff member of the Media Studio since 2002. He advises and guides staff and students through the creative uses of hardware/software when working with time based mediums within a fine art context. Resulting from his research and practice as a film and video artist, Hugh has obtained a wealth of knowledge around camera and post production editing processes.

After completing a BA (Hons) from the University of Ulster in Belfast in the 80s, Hugh spent 10 years making and showing work in Ireland and the UK and in 1996 received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation award. Over these years Hugh’s studio practice and research moved away from that of a painter to a set of inquiries around how art could be made through a process of utilising and changing everyday materials. Interested in an art practise situated out-with the conventional white cube gallery space, and to help him resolve questions around his practise, Hugh enrolled in the Master of Fine Art programme at The Glasgow School of Art in 1997 and graduated in 1999.

Since 1999 Hugh has worked predominantly with film and video. His artistic output is driven by a fascination with the fabric and context of specific sites, exploring concepts where artworks are spun directly from the fabric of the sites where they are eventually shown. All of his work is an ongoing line of enquiry, which pushes the possibilities offered by digital technologies and an interest in the relationship between the film-works and architectural space and how the conditions of display affect the readings of the work.
