Study Abroad is a highly beneficial experience to students, developing both study and life skills by spending 3-9 months studying part of their degree programme overseas. Many employers want to employ students who can demonstrate independence of thought, organisational skills and motivation. These skills are encouraged and are developed while studying at the GSA. Study Abroad is open to all students from outside the European Union.
Study Abroad students will normally be pursuing a degree course at their home institution, and choose to come to Glasgow for a term, two terms or a full academic year, before returning to their home institution to complete their degree. Within the Schools of Fine Art and Design, students may choose to study in Term 1; Terms 2&3 or the full year. In the Mackintosh School of Architecture students must come for the full-year. The Study Abroad programme normally consists of four days a week intensive studio practice and one day of Historical & Critical Studies, although it may vary by department. All participants of the programme will study alongside full-time degree students and are fully integrated into the life of the School.
When you make your Study Abroad application to the GSA you will need to specify to which specialist department you are applying. You should talk to your Study Abroad advisor about this as they may be able to advise you on the most appropriate choice. Once you have completed your application form and put together your slide portfolio, this should be mailed to the International Office at the GSA - your school may do this for you. As demand for places is usually higher than the number of places available you will need to send your application in good time, and certainly no later than our deadlines:
15th May for September entry
15th October for January entry
Information on tuition fees and costs can be found on a separate page (follow the menu to your left).
Once you have completed your studies at the GSA a transcript showing your grades and the work you undertook will be sent to your home institution. Transcripts are sent out in July and late February each year.
Full guidelines are viewable and the application form can be downloaded for completion. If you are still unclear about any part of the application process speak to your Study Abroad advisor at home first - they may well have the answer. Otherwise you can email us at international@gsa.ac.uk
