Cost of Living - How Much Will I Need?

Based on the following breakdown, we recommend that you allow approximately £680 per month minimum (excluding entertainment) for a single student and £950 for a couple. For each child, add approx £1,800 per year.

The following is a rough breakdown of the estimated cost per month for a single student living in shared self-catering accommodation:

  • Accommodation £300
  • Bills (electricity, gas) £60
  • Food £140
  • Mobile Phone (contract or "pay as you go") £25
  • Materials - programme dependant - please refer to the programme pages on this website
  • Miscellaneous (clothes, toiletries, bus & train fares, etc) £130
  • Field/Study Trips - programme dependant - please refer to the programme pages on this website
  • Specialist equipment - programme dependant - please refer to the programme pages on this website
  • Entertainment - variable

You should also remember that you will need to budget for travel home.

For visa purposes, international students must be able to evidence that they have £800/month in a bank account in their own name.

Many students work approx. 15-20 hours a week to top up their student loan. For budget advice and information, please contact the Student Welfare Service. For information or assistance regarding part-time employment opportunities, please contact the Careers Service.
