Bianca Hester is motivated by an exploration of the connection
between space, materiality and embodiment. Her projects are
informed by sculptural and architectural processes and oriented by
an engagement with the unpredictable forces of matter and time. She
works in response to specific material, social and spatial
conditions and builds provisional constructions and open-ended
situations, often involving collaborations, events, imagery and
video. Alongside this practice she teaches, writes and generates
publications.

Recent solo projects include 'a world fully accessible by no
living being', Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture, Federation
Square (winning entry), 'big log jam,' with Open Spatial Workshop,
AEAF, Adelaide, (2011), 'please leave these windows open overnight
to enable the fans to draw in cool air during the early hours of
the morning', Helen Macpherson Smith Commission, commissioned by
Juliana Engberg, curated by Charlote Day, ACCA, Melbourne (2010),
'only from the perspective of a viewer situated upon the surface of
the earth does day and night occur', The Narrows (2009), The West
Brunswick Sculpture Triennial (with the OSW collective 2009),
'fashioning discontinuities', the Centre for Contemporary
Photography (2009) and 'projectprojects', The Showroom in London
(2008). The book titled 'accommodating spaces, materials, projects,
people, videos, actions, objects, thoughts: relatively' was
commissioned by The Narrows in 2009.

Bianca Hester recently completed a PhD by project in sculpture
at RMIT. She was a founding member of CLUBSpropject inc
(2002-2007), a member of OSW (2003 - ongoing) and co-ordinates the
second year program in the department of Sculpture and Spatial
Practice at VCA.

The 186th RSA Annual Exhibition
The Royal Scottish Academy
28 April - 6 June 2012. All RSA
Galleries

Presenting the country's leading contemporary artists and
architects, The 186th RSA Annual Exhibition
features a wide variety of painting, sculpture, filmmaking,
photography, installation and architecture across all thirteen
magnificent upper and lower galleries in the RSA Building on The
Mound, Edinburgh.

The Glasgow School of Art will participate in
the curated element of the exhibition titled 'The Artist's Studio'
by showcasing preparatory drawings and the architectural model of
the school's new building designed by Steven Holl
Architects (New York) in partnership with JM
Architects (Glasgow) and Arup
Engineering.

Considered one of America's most important architects, Steven
Holl is recognised for his ability to blend space and light with
great contextual sensitivity, and to utilise the unique qualities
of each project to create a concept-driven design. He specialises
in integrating new projects into contexts with particular cultural
and historic importance and has extensive experience in designing
both educational and cultural buildings.

Inspired by Mackintosh's inventive manipulation of his 1909 Art
School building's plan and section to introduce and deploy light in
a tremendous variety of inspiring and successful ways, the new
design complements its neighbour, but moves forward using a new
language of light. With well proportioned studio and workshop
spaces at the core of teaching and making art, these spaces are
arranged in plan and section with natural side and top light for
inspiring work environments, supplemented with 'driven voids of
light' that penetrate the building's core and deliver natural light
through its depth; providing direct connectivity with the outside
world through the changing intensity and colour of the sky. These
ventilated voids rising through the building also support its
environmental sustainably; which is set to achieve a BREEAM
Excellent rating as well as meeting the School's own ambitious
targets for sustainability.
