Professor Ann Markusen
'Arts and Culture as Regeneration: Four UK Cities' Experiences' watch video

Since the late 1980s, UK cities struggling with de-industrialization have turned to arts and culture as one route to economic and urban regeneration. Markusen considers five features of these policy interventions:  scale of intervention, mix of physical and human capital, spatial location throughout the city, attention to cultural industries, and commitment to participation. She compares efforts and outcomes in Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle/Gateshead, and Sheffield with some reference to US cases.

The Glasgow Urban Lab is delighted to host the concluding lecture by Professor Ann Markusen, the current UK Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the Glasgow Urban Lab, Mackintosh School of Architecture. Professor Markusen has been at GSA for 8 months and will return to the US in April. This lecture offers a chance to hear Markusen's first thoughts on her new research, conducted this winter at GSA and around the UK.
