Studio 58: Women Artists in Glasgow since World War II

In this lecture, Dr. Sarah Lowndes will discuss the exhibition she has curated for the Mackintosh Museum at The Glasgow School of Art, Studio 58: Women Artists in Glasgow since World War II.  In recent years, a number of highly regarded women artists have emerged from the Glasgow art scene, including Turner Prize nominees Christine Borland, Cathy Wilkes, and Karla Black. The lecture will draw links between the work of contemporary women artists in Glasgow alongside the little known and under-represented lineage of women's art in the city from 1939 onwards, within the frame of the city's art school where all of the artists included in the exhibition either studied or taught. The themes that will be explored are: landscape/still life, body/self, printed matter and photography/film, discussed in relationship to artists including Louise Annand, Margaret Morris, Mary Armour and Ivy Proudfoot, as well as those that followed them such as Joan Eardley, Margot Sandeman, Bet Low and Sam Ainsley and younger artists such as Cathy Wilkes, Claire Barclay, Victoria Morton, Hayley Tompkins and Karla Black. A question and answer session will follow the lecture, which will be chaired by Dr Sarah Smith, Forum for Critical Enquiry, The Glasgow School of Art.

Dr. Sarah Lowndes is a lecturer, curator and writer based in Glasgow. Lowndes lectures in the Forum for Critical Inquiry at The Glasgow School of Art.
