'the town is the venue' - watch video

For this lecture, Claudia Zeiske talks about a series of projects underpinning Deveron Arts' 'the town is the venue' strategy of public art in the Aberdeenshire town of Huntly. Here strange things have happened: Barbie amnesties, Music addressing Streetfight, a mass staged funeral parade and a mass cycle ride, to name just a few. The event will reflect on this unique methodology through the introduction of the newly published book ARTocracy, a curatorial handbook for collaborative practice. The book gives insight into the organisation of collaborative projects through hands-on advice and applied examples, paying tribute to the precarious balance between artistic quality and social consequence.

Claudia Zeiske is a freelance curator and cultural activist. Originally from Germany, she studied Economics and Social Anthropology in Berlin and London. Since coming to Scotland in 1995, she has collaborated with many smaller and larger organisations across Scotland and further afield. She is co-founder and Director of Deveron Arts and set up the acclaimed Artists at Glenfiddich programme in rural Speyside. Claudia has a keen interest of bringing the local to the global. She developed a unique curatorial interest based on a balanced approach between artistic criticality and community involvement through developing projects with artists from across the globe. Today she is concentrating on the development of the international residency programme of Deveron Arts' the town is the venue in the town of Huntly in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The lecture will be followed by the launch of 'ARTocracy,' a book by Claudia Zeiske and Nuno Sacramento.

The Wednesday Event at the Glasgow School of Art is a series of informal lectures, screenings, panel discussions and pecha kuchas, organised primarily by Cultural Engagement and Exhibitions, with input from the rest of the school.  Designed to be cross-school, cross-platform and cross-disciplinary, some of them might even make you cross!
