Robert Tavernor is Emeritus Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the London School of Economics (LSE), and was previously professor of architecture at Edinburgh (1992-5) and Bath (1995-2005). Through the London-based Tavernor Consultancy he provides architectural, heritage and urban planning advice on projects that include large-scale masterplanning and building design submissions and the design of individual buildings. He also provides heritage advice nationally and internationally relating to the design of modern buildings in an historic urban context, and recently developed a heritage strategy for the city of Perm in the Russian Urals. His lecture to Mac students was based on his practice experience and his book, Smoot's Ear: The Measure of Humanity (Yale University Press, 2007; paperback 2008).

Hosted by The Mackintosh School of Architecture, the Architecture Friday Lecture Series looks beyond buildings and makes connections between architecture and wider issues like culture and the urban environment.
