The Studio 58 symposium offers an opportunity to draw out some
of themes arising from the Mackintosh Museum exhibition Studio 58:
Women Artists in Glasgow Since World War II. There will be a
presentation by Studio 58 curator Sarah Lowndes and by Susannah
Waters and Peter Trowles from the Archives and Collections Centre
at The Glasgow School of Art, who have loaned numerous works to the
exhibition. The symposium will also build upon the momentum of
other exhibitions and events that explore the work of women artists
in Scotland, such as Andrea Kusel's Equals exhibition at Paisley
Museum (2012) and Stacy Boldrick's Feminism and Contemporary Art
seminar (Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, 2011). This symposium has
been co-organised by Dr Sarah Lowndes, GSA Archives and Collections
Centre and GSA Exhibitions.
Further information:
Peter Trowles, GSA's Mackintosh Curator with
Susannah Waters, GSA Archivist will give a
historical background on learning and teaching at The Glasgow
School of Art from late 1930's to present day, focusing in
particular on the women artists' work from Archives and Collections
that has been loaned to the exhibition. Dr. Stacy
Boldrick, Research and Interpretation Manager at The
Fruitmarket Gallery and writer on contemporary and medieval art,
will discuss feminism and its relationship to contemporary
art. Dr. Sarah Lowndes, a lecturer in
GSA's Forum for Critical enquiry, curator and writer based in
Glasgow, will discuss the process of curating Studio 58: Women
Artists in Glasgow Since WWII. Andrea Kusel,
Curator of Art, Paisley Museum will discuss the process of curating
the exhibition Equals (2012), which celebrates a century
of female artistic creativity, including new acquisitions for the
permanent collection at Paisley Museum. Equals has an emphasis on
artists associated with Glasgow School of Art, from trail-blazing
Glasgow Girls, Olive Carleton Smyth and Stansmore Dean, through to
their successors such as Joan Eardley and contemporary artist Mary
Redmond, whose newly commissioned work is shown here for the first
time.
The symposium will be chaired by Dr Sarah
Smith, Acting (Joint) Head of Department for the Forum for
Critical Inquiry at The Glasgow School of Art.
The Studio 58 catalogue, designed by GSA
graduates Sophie Dyer and Maeve Redmond and featuring contributions
from the 54 artists in the exhibition and writer's texts by Aleana
Egan, Liz Lochhead, Sarah Lowndes, Louise Shelley, and Joanne
Tatham, will be launched at the symposium.
The catalogue is supported by The Glasgow School of Art and
Glasgow Society of Women Artists.
