James Houston

James Houston graduated in 2008 with a first class degree in Visual Communication. The Newbery Medal & The Bram Stoker award were given at graduation for final-year work which had reached over a million views online.

He now teaches 3rd and 4th year in the same department (renamed Communication Design) and is responsible for helping students find and affirm their own creative voice, be aware of digital toolsets, learn and re-enforce rigorous interrogation of ideas.

James is a filmmaker, designer and animator currently focusing on the emerging technological avenues within Graphic Design.

James has worked on commercial motion graphics work both independently and as part of a larger studio (Playdead and ISO Design) These projects have covered television, film, interactive exhibitions, artist films and internet shorts. Artistic commissions include Allotment & Science Museum London. Independent design clients include Miaoux Miaoux, Frightened Rabbit, Washington Irving, Channel 4, Converse & The Comedy Unit.

Technology can often act as a prompt to my work – I’m compelled to revisit old or forgotten ideas through the lens of contemporary technology – searching for an untapped angle which may be ripe for creative exploitation.
