Craft to Digital: interdisciplinary transferable techniques

Supervisors: Professor Irene McAra McWilliam, Jimmy Stephen-Cran (2010-’12), Paul Stickley, Dr Helena Britt

This practice-led research is underpinned by my background in constructed and printed textile design and informed by my previous research that explored the use of digital technologies in the UK Textile Industry.

My PhD investigates the relationship that is forged when traditional craft practices and advanced technology are brought together through studio inquiry. By confronting perceptions of creative problem solving, and questioning the relevance of physicality in contemporary textile design, I use my own textile practice as a method for theory building in craft and design research. This project provides a contemporary insight into the application of grounded theory and presents a real world understanding of the value of research in terms of textile design practice.
