The Glasgow Urban Model

Investigator(s): Mr. Douglas Pritchard

Funder(s): Glasgow City Council

Duration: July 2005 to August 2007

Glasgow City Council recently launched the Glasgow Urban Model – a unique online tool which maps the city and its buildings down to a scale of 20cm. This two-year project, commissioned by the Council and led by the DDS, will allow the public to engage with the future design and development of the city. The model is a world-first in terms of its size and accuracy and will allow access to planning applications in a 3D environment. In future, the model will be used as a marketing and tourism tool, with potential visitors and investors able to access Glasgow’s unique built heritage from anywhere in the world. As well as showcasing the regeneration of the City Centre and River Clyde, the model will be useful to public agencies such as the police and fire service as they develop emergency evacuation procedures; it could also be used to ensure that the regeneration of the city is environmentally sustainable, with modelling on transportation, flooding and drainage. The detailed model will be completed by August, 2007 and it is anticipated that a second phase will be commissioned which will cover the entire city.
