Moving Image Art Projection in The Digital Age
I aim to understand how the characteristics of digital language have modified gallery-based video art projection in works since the 2000s, through both the historical relations with film projection in post war expanded cinema and the new modalities that have arisen with the computer.
• Can digital projection be considered a specific experiential element of gallery-based video art in the digital context of 2000s when compared with past film projection experiences?
• What are the differences between digital video projection and film projection beyond the question of materiality in its relationships with galleries’ and museums’ architecture?
• How has contemporary curatorial practice influenced the ways in which moving image art is projected in galleries and museums?
I have identified a significant lack of literature discussing the issue of digital video projection, since the great majority of the existing literature (such as books by Tamara Trodd and Chrissie Iles) focus predominantly on the 1970s and 1980s, in other words, focusing predominantly on film. Other books such as those by Balsom, Conolly and Uroskie, despite discussing the moving image in galleries, do not focus on the specific problematic of the projection in the digital era.
My historical time span from the 2000s onwards will offer an innovative and necessary response to this theoretical gap that still exists in the literature. I consider that digital projection is nowadays an essential component to understand the differences between film and video as an artistic language beyond the adopted materiality. My hypothesis is that the difference between these two modes of projection is the interactivity aspect with the audience and the gallery space. This situation can be exemplified through the use of digital sensors or biosensors automatically linked with the digital video data in installations, for example, as stated by Lev Manovich, which is not possible with film projection.
