Programme Overview

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION COURSE 2017/18

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

The Portfolio Preparation Course is aimed at assisting students in the preparation of a body of work for application to their chosen area of study. The course provides students with their own Portfolio studio, giving students the opportunity to work in a unique art school environment, an exciting and dynamic place full of creativity and inspiration. Students attending this course have been consistently successful in achieving entry to Higher or Further Education Fine Art and Design courses, both in Glasgow and further afield.

The course is studio based, running 2.5 days per week for 27 weeks from August to March. Broad based and flexible in content, the course is structured to assist students in the selection of a specialist area of study. With drawing as its foundation, the course is project and critique driven. Projects vary in length ranging from one-day workshops to those that run over two to four weeks. Seminars, exhibition visits and discussion groups aim to broaden student's awareness of both historical and contemporary art practices. These underpin and support the studio work, enabling students to contextualise their practice and situate their work within a broader artistic context. The course provides a platform for feedback and review of work, as well as advice on selection and presentation of work for inclusion in a portfolio for application.

Please note - this course is not suitable for non-EU students as they would not be able to obtain an appropriate Visa to enter the UK.

The department also runs short courses in portfolio building. Further details can be found below.

Portfolio Evening Course Fine Art and Design

This 17 week course is designed to assist you in putting together a portfolio of work for application to Art School or a silmilar course of study.

Centred on drawing you will learn how to examine and develop visual ideas through a variety of 2D and 3D media and methods. You will be encouraged to solve problems creatively through research and practice and develop a greater sense of critical awareness. An integral component of the course is resourcing and exploring ideas through independent sketchbook work, which should extend your practice out with the studio and class hours. instruction will be delivered through individual studio tutorials and critique sessions.

Classes are delivered one evening a week.

Portfolio Summer Courses in Fine Art and Design

Taking a summer course in portfolio preparation is a great way to find out if this is the path for you. With an emphasis on drawing you will learn to examine and develop your ideas through a variety of 2D and 3D drawing, markmaking, colour exploration and sketchbooks. An important part of the course is researching and developing your ideas through independent sketchbook work, so you will be encouraged to extend your work out with the class hours. Individual studio tutorials, group discussion and critique will help develop your creative process and encourage lateral thinking.

Summer portfolio courses are offered throughout July as one week units. You can sign up for one week only or for two, three, or all four weeks. The Continuing Education Department will be happy to help you design a suitable range of courses for your individual needs. Whether a one week taster into the concepts of Portfolio Preparartion or a multi-week schedule of Portfolio prepartion and complementary courses such as Life Drawing, our office can help you find the best schedule for our summer studies.

Portfolio preparation is a flexible course of study, designed by the course leaders to help each student achieve their next step.
