Programme Overview

Drawing & Painting is the structural foundation of many art practices as well as a contemporary form for exploration and creativity.  The Department's drawing and painting courses take place in Mackintosh's original painting studios.  Our courses span a large range of mediums, techniques and genres.  You will work with experienced tutors who share a passion for their specialism.

Evening Courses

Drawing for Beginners

Through a series of workshops we will look at structure, form, proportion and perspective - what these terms mean and how they work.

Introduction to Drawing & Painting

This course is intended to develop the students understanding of the painting process, placing emphasis on drawing as a crucial aspect of research in the construction and composition of painting.

Oil Painting from the Beginning

From the absolute beginner to the more seasoned painter, this course aims to lay a foundation in the basics of painting in oils.  You will cover the preparation of painting surfaces (canvas stretching etc), tonal studies, the mixing of colour, indirect painting, glazing and experimental mark making.

Acrylic Painting

Acrylic paint offers tremendous versatility with outstanding colour range, environmental benefits and great value.  This course takes advantage of the quick drying quality of acrylic paint, to work rapidly, emphasising immediacy, directness and colour sensitivity.

Oil Painting

This course explores the versatility of oil paint, providing a solid base of technique on which to build the skills and confidence to produce both accurate rendering and more abstract works.

Day Courses

Drawing & Painting

Still life and imagination will be the main component of the course but you will also have the opportunity to work directly from the nude model. Students will be encouraged to experiment with materials and work towards developing an individual approach.

Aspects of Drawing & Painting

You will learn how to handle the unique properties of oil paint, how to mix colour and apply paint while developing your own use of the many techniques this medium has to offer.

Landscape Drawing & Painting

Drawing from observation, memory, imagination, sketchbook material or photographs, this course will explore a broad range of techniques and materials such as charcoals, pastels, waterbased media and oil paints.

Waterbased Media

There will be an emphasis on exploring a range of contemporary and traditional techniques and applications. An important aspect of this course will also include the study of artists who work in this media.
