James Cowie (Drawing & Painting 1916)

James Cowie (1886 - 1956) graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 1916, going on to become one of the most individual Scottish painters of the early 20th century. The strong linear style of his work was distinctive at the time, especially in comparison to his contemporaries, the Scottish Colourists, and he was known for his disciplined methods - often making a large number of preparatory drawings before embarking on a larger painting. He worked as a teacher for many years, going on to become Head of Painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen.
