The Glasgow School of Art: Doors Open Day programme 2017

*** Bookings for free Doors Open Day tickets for tours on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th September open 10am 23d August***

Tours:

We recommend booking to avoid disappointment as spaces are limited to 20 per tour. There will be 10 walk in places per tour to be claimed on the day, offered on a first come first served basis from 10am each day. 

All tickets are held under the booking name and issued on the day of the tour from the Window on Mackintosh Visitor Centre. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to tour departure time to pick up your tickets, as latecomers cannot be admitted to join the tour once commenced and unclaimed tickets will be redistributed to waiting visitors.

Mackintosh at the GSA Tour

Saturday 16th September: 10.30am, 11am, 11.30am, 12pm, 12.30pm, 1pm, 2pm, 2.30pm, 3pm, 3.30pm.

Discover architecture from the turn-of-the-century Victorian greats to Mackintosh's innovative designs and his contemporaries working in the Glasgow Style of Art Nouveau with our knowledgeable student guides.

Visitor Centre & ground floor Reid building

Monday 11th - Sunday 17th September: Open 10am - 4.30pm

Free entry, no booking required.

Uncover the history of The Glasgow School of Art from 1845 to present day in our state of the art visitor centre. Take in the impressive “driven voids of light” and bold architectural features of the Steven Holl designed new Reid building’s across the ground floor areas open to the public.


Reid Gallery Exhibition: Pioneers of Post-War Pattern

Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th September: Open 10am - 4.30pm

Free entry, no booking required.

An exhibition showcasing products developed by GSA's Centre for Advanced Textiles and inspired by the work of mid-20th century female designers represented in GSA's Archives & Collections. The textile designs of Lucienne Day, and GSA alumnae Sylvia Chalmers, Dorothy Smith and Margaret Stewart demonstrate an eclectic mix of vibrant colours and abstract patterns.

 

Reid Auditorium Talks 

Craft: A Case Study - Mackintosh Building Restoration Project

The GSA restoration project draws on a number of highly skilled building and decorative crafts people. These talks are an opportunity to hear from the craft operatives themselves about the challenges faced to conserve, restore and rebuild the Mackintosh Building.

 

Conservation Philosophy: A Case Study - Mackintosh Building Restoration Project
Monday 11th September: 5pm - 7pm

A lecture and panel talk discussing the conservation philosophy guiding the work undertaken to conserve, restore and rebuild the Mackintosh Building, returning it to use as a working art school. This lecture and panel talk is an opportunity to discuss this ever present dichotomy facing the conservation and restoration of buildings in use, drawing on the unique and precious Mackintosh Building as a case study.
