School of Simulation and Visualisation >

The School of Simulation and Visualisation is an undergraduate and postgraduate research and commercial centre of The Glasgow School of Art. Its intense learning and research environment exploits the interface between science, technology and the arts to explore imaginative and novel uses of advanced 3D digital visualisation and interaction technologies.

On the 1st August 2023, the School joined with the GSA's Innovation School to form the new School of Innovation and Technology.

Undergraduate Programmes
SimVis offers two specialist pathways of BSc Immersive Systems Design:

Also offered at undergraduate level is:

This programme is a two year BDes (Hons) degree programme. Applications to this programme are welcomed from students entering directly into year 3, with articulation from HND programmes at college, or from mature students with relevant experience.

Postgraduate Programmes
SimVis offers four distinct taught postgraduate programmes and pathways:

SimVis is also home to a growing PhD community.

The School of Simulation and Visualisation's research activities revolve around Virtual and Augmented Reality, immersive sound, game based learning and interactive digital narrative. Our researchers are active in the fields of architecture, engineering, education, environment as well as games and entertainment, heritage and medical visualisation.

The School of Simulation and Visualisation has a large portfolio of projects with business and industry in Scotland, the UK and Europe, centred on expertise in real-time 3D visualisation, 3D sound, modelling, motion capture and animation. In particular, SimVis has built a reputation for world leading work in 3D visualisation for heritage, as well as for our work in flagship projects such as the visitor experience for the Battle of Bannockburn visitor centre. Beyond heritage, SimVis works on a wide range of motion and 3D data capture and visualisation projects for commercial and industrial clients.

The School of Simulation and Visualisation sound dubbing studios are regularly used for network television and film productions, as well as in the school's own visualisation projects.

School of Simulation and Visualisation at Pacific Quay
Since its inception, the School of Simulation and Visualisation has grown rapidly and in summer 2009 relocated to new, dedicated premises at Pacific Quay (already home to the Glasgow Science Centre, BBC Scotland and the Scottish Media Group). The facilities include a high specification ambisonic auralisation laboratory (Soundlab) run as a joint venture between ARUP Acoustics and SimVis.
