GoMA is delighted to present the event ‘David Elliot & Lawrence Weiner in conversation’. This event looks forward to two exciting launches which will happen here at GoMA on Thursday the 23rd of October. These are the opening of the Hayward touring show ‘Art from Elsewhere’ which is curated by David Elliot and the unveiling of Lawrence Weiner’s new permanent artwork which will be carved into the steps around GoMA.

Hosted at Glasgow School of Art’s Reid Auditorium on Wednesday the 22nd at 6pm, David Elliot and Lawrence Weiner will discuss a broad range of issues from ‘Quality in contemporary art’ to the idea of ‘words as sculptures and texts as meanings in a multilingual art world’ and .... ‘whatever else may take our fancy.’

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to hear two major international figures have a frank conversation about current issues in contemporary art.

Space is limited and there will be a high demand so please return any unwanted tickets.

Lawrence Weiner’s texts have appeared in all sorts of places over the last five decades and although he sees himself as a sculptor rather than a conceptualist, he is among the trailblazers of the 1960s to present art as language. He defines his sculptural medium simply as ‘language + the material referred to’, in the sense that language is a material for construction.

David Elliott is a curator and writer based in Berlin.  He has been director of the Museum of Modern Art Oxford, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, The Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art. He was Artistic Director of the 17th Biennale of Sydney, the 1st International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Kiev and the 4th International Biennale for Young Art, Moscow.
