The MDes Fashion + Textiles cohort are delighted to show their work alongside fellow students from postgraduate programmes across The Glasgow School of Art as part of the third Graduate Degree Show.
The Masters in Fashion + Textiles is a small, specialist and very intensive programme with a unique place in Higher Education and Industry. Situated within a strong textiles centre, it draws on that expertise - supporting a mix of both textile and silhouette-led Fashion development.
“Over one concentrated Masters year of study, our designers are encouraged to hone their professional skills, take considered creative risks and ultimately strengthen their individual creative voice.” Jimmy Stephen-Cran, Head of Department
With the emphasis on the individual, once again, this year sees some strong collections emerge. Collectively the designers draw their inspiration from a varied selection of historical, contemporary and cultural influences. Over 2013-14 these have ranged from architectural and geometric forms to renaissance painting and intricate historical armour, as well as traditional Chinese temari, and drawing in both minutely detailed and pared down forms.
Students this year have experimented with diverse approaches to practice. These include experimental dyes, digital print, innovative patchwork techniques, foils and flocks, three-dimensional acetate and wood veneer exploration.
Given its diminutive size, the Programme punches above its weight, with award winning students and graduates going on to a broad range of destinations and experiences in Fashion, Textiles and the Arts. We look forward to the next steps for this year’s graduands.
