The GSA Public Lecture Series Presents:
Professorial Lecture
Professor Alistair Payne

'Changing Times: A reflection in three parts'

This talk will be delivered in three interwoven parts.

The first part looks at different catalysts for change and responds to core developments within the School of Fine Art over the last 5 years.  This will offer an outline of the events and challenges that the school has faced, whilst also presenting the exciting estate developments within the school - planned for the coming year. This is in response to changes in context and other external factors that have also to be taken into account amidst the progression and development of education within fine art practices.

The second part focuses upon new opportunities and outlines a proposed strategy for the future in order to further develop contemporary fine art practice within the School of Fine Art. There are numerous challenges that have to be addressed and it is imperative to create a structure that will enable and provide the spaces and environment for this to happen. Essentially this vision for the school looks at new and radical methods of making and spaces for thinking. The retention of disciplinarity alongside the promotion of interdisciplinary practices will also be discussed.

The final section will discuss how Alistair Payne’s work as a practitioner sits within this ‘ecology’. The talk will close with a presentation of Alistair Payne’s own artistic research, outlining the work he has made and the theoretical position or space of that work. This will also present the philosophical underpinning of the research and practice relevant to his work.
