Richard Murphy studied architecture at the University of Newcastle and the University of Edinburgh, and set up his practice Richard Murphy Architects in Edinburgh in 1991.Richard Murphy Architects has won a total of 19 RIBA awards, ranging across many building types, including education, the arts, healthcare and housing. In 2006 Richard Murphy was voted “Scottish Architect of the Year” by the readers of Prospect Magazine. Among his best-known works are the residences on the Old Meatmarket/Graham Square in Glasgow (2000), the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh (1991), the Edinburgh Maggie’s Centre (1995, nominated for the Stirling Prize), the Tolbooth Arts Centre in Stirling (2002), and the Student Accommodation for the University of Edinburgh on Holyrood Road (2014).
