To mark the centenary of the premiere of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in Paris, The Glasgow School of Art presents 1913: Rite of Spring 100 Years On: Exhibitions and Events presenting artwork, performances and ideas, by alumni and students across GSA disciplines and programmes, with contemporary and critical approaches to the Rite of Spring and its milieu. 1913 will take place in May 2013 at venues across Glasgow: The Underground Car Park at Fleming House, The Hidden Gardens, Mono and The Old Hairdresser's.

Written by Igor Stravinsky for the 1913 Paris season of Diaghilev's Ballet Russes and choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky, 'The Rite of Spring' premiered on May 29th 1913 at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Paris and caused immediate uproar. The story of pagan sacrifice, the avant-garde nature of the music, the outrageous costumes and unusual choreography prompted audience members to riot and had critics up in arms.

1913 forms part of an ongoing collaboration among The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) and The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) to mark the centenary of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring premiere. A new Performance, MONAD, choreographed by Hubert Essakow, and supported by Scottish Ballet, will take place in Tramway 1 on the 18th of May 2013. Embracing the spirit of collaboration embodied in Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, MONAD brings together students and emerging artists to work together to create a contemporary response to the original performance.
