Silver Narratives Worth Celebrating: Karen Westland

29 October - 4 December 2021

Glasgow Art Club

As part of the ‘Art of the Possible’ programme, a collaboration between The Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow Art Club, the work of Karen Westland, winner of the GSA Sustainability Award in 2015, is exhibited at the Glasgow Art Club.

Glasgow-based silversmith Karen Westland advocates for responsible practices through her innovative craftwork and research. Their work is influenced by photonics, optic designs and applications to explore how we engage with technologies for sustainable development in Western society. Karen aims to offer their clients luxury products with narratives worth celebrating.

In her work Infinity Bowls, (2015) the design explored how scientific equipment is built on a gargantuan scale to observe and collect data from outer space. Techniques included laser cutting silver, selective laser sintering, traditional lost-wax casting and welding, to utilise innovative technologies.

This exhibition is part of the wider ‘Art of the Possible’ programme, a collaboration between The Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow Art Club, coinciding with COP26.
