Audio-cinematic sculptor discusses the concepts, principles and inspiration for his work, including Seismik, his Sonica performance that taps into seismic waves and the Earth’s tremor-related phenomena in real-time.

An acclaimed multi disciplinary artist with more than two decades of experience in media arts, Herman Kolgen lives and works in Montreal. An audiocinetic sculptor, he draws his raw material from the intimate relationship between sound and image. Kolgen creates pieces that take on the form of installations, video and film works, performances and sound sculptures. He works in a constant cycle of exploration, at the crossroads of different media to conjure up a new technical language and singular aesthetic. His work has been shown at Venice Biennale, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, Isea, Centre Georges Pompidou, BFI, Dissonanze, Mutek, Elektra, Sonar, Taipei Digital Arts and Shanghai E-Arts. He has also performed with Ensemble Contemporain, Paris and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

Sonica takes place across Glasgow from 29 Oct – 8 Nov with a programme dedicated to world-class visual sonic arts, presenting emerging British talent alongside exceptional international artists from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Indonesia, Netherlands and Québec.
