Taking Sides: The Student Medal Project 2012
10 July - 14 Sept 2012
East and West corridors, Level 1, Mackintosh Building

The Student Medal Project was initiated by the British Art Medal Society to return the art of modern medal making to the art colleges in the UK, including sculpture, jewellery or metal working departments. Students are given the opportunity to gain experience working in the medallic medium, and are thus enabled to use it throughout their artistic working life. Over the past nineteen years the response has been enthusiastic and energetic, resulting each year in an imaginative display of student work of over one hundred medals. The subjects that the art students tackle are left up to them - some works are extremely personal, some humorous, and some deal with world-wide subjects.

Medals are from The Glasgow School of Art, Jewellery and Sculpture departments; Edinburgh College of Art; University College Falmouth; Mah-E-Mehr Institute of Art, Tehran; Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design; Loughborough University School of Art and Design; Norwich University College of Arts; Truro College; Wolverhampton; Canterbury; Birmingham City University; University for the creative Arts Farnham; West wales School of Arts; as well as medals by teachers.
