‘We jewellery makers should open ourselves to the adventure and the power of the direct encounter between our jewellery and its wearer.’
Otto Kunzli
Our connection with jewellery is deep, personal, and sensory. Our reaction to a wearable object is based not only on its visual effect but also on how our other senses perceive and react to it.
As makers, we work closely with materials, completely transforming their feel and visual effect through experimentation in volume, movement, texture, balance and form. Whether undertaken by hand or with basic tools, the sense of touch is key to our creative process.
The exhibition explores the theme of Touch with responses from students across years 1, 2 and 3 on the undergraduate Silversmithing & Jewellery design programme at The Glasgow School of Art. The work on display explores how a wearer may interact with a piece, how it is worn, the sensory impact of material choices, how weight affects the work, how it is perceived on and off the body, and how our sense of touch enhances this experience.
