Alumni-founded design organisation Make Works partners with A Feral Studio for a series of 20 minute talks by designers, manufacturers and researchers around the theme of 'workwear'.

Speakers:

Sadie Hough - Work/Wear

Sadie Hough graduated from the History of Design MA from the Royal College of Art and Victoria & Albert Museum in 2013, having completed a dissertation titled Work/Wear: Clothing in British Manufacturing, 1959-1982. During this time she was also a co-editor in chief of design history website Unmaking Things. Her interestes include industrial history, occupational clothing, and design strategies of adaptation and improvisation. She is currently working as an Exhibitions Assistant at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She recently wrote a piece titled ‘Dress Up for the Occasion’: The Promise of Workwear, 1960–1982 for the (upcoming) Make Works publication.

Eldina Begic - The Comradettes

Eldina Begic is an artist and designer based in London. Her clothing project, the Comradettes is inspired by socialist work culture, drawing on her upbringing in former communist Yugoslavia. Its aim is to shift the perception of manual workers and production in society. Comradettes draws on Constructivist ideas and encourages people to take pride in utility clothing, as Begic describes "productivist worksuits". While traditionally workwear has been designed for men – with women’s workwear being simply a scaled-down version – Comradettes is specifically designed for women. Eldina will be talking about the influence of Workwear in her practice and The Comradettes project.

Dawson Denim - The History of Denim

Kelly Dawson is from family-run denim manufacturer Dawson Denim in Brighton.

Speaking about the 'history of denim', including the origins of weaving, indigo dye history; Kelly will introduce us to Americas gold rush (denim boom time) to her present day work. Dawson Denim aims to produce the best Workwear using their 15 years experience of working with denim. All of their products are made in their workshop in Brighton, East Sussex.

Make Works are factory finders for designers and makers. This is the second in a series of five events across Glasgow aiming to make it easier for creative professionals to work with industry and produce high quality work locally.
