Digital Facture: Painting After New Media Art

Primary Supervisor: Dr Mike Stubbs
Co-Supervisor: Dr Neil Clements

My practice-based research attempts to appraise the position of cross-disciplinary, expanded painting practices and processes within a perpetually shifting New Media Art discourse.
Through intense studio focus, I examine the surface modality and morphology of painting, specifically: pigment vs pixel, paint as pure data, the liminal nature of painting amidst analogue and digital modes of production, the authenticity of the brushstroke, the autonomy of the gesture, and the painted gesture as a unit of quantifiable information. I translate material processes carried out in the studio into technological production, ultimately involving collaborative, cross-disciplinary technological innovation which reflects rapidly developing Postanalogue painting practices; considering paint itself as a perpetually evolving form of New Media, and not simply an aesthetic extension of this emerging discourse.
