Programme overview

The Master programme in Interior Design focuses on practice and research-based learning, aiming to develop independently minded designers who challenge society and the field of interior design in new ways. The programme reflects this context and explores both the existing territory and the hinterland of the discipline, asking why interiors are produced, rather than how. Operating in an academically rigorous environment and engaging with a range of themes, methods, tools, the programme encourages reflective, and analytical approaches to subject-centred themes grouped around historical and theoretical framework Context (Stage 1), multidisciplinary and imaginary approaches (Stage 2) and boundary-breaking solutions merging research, practice, and students’ own expertise (Stage 3). During their studies, students are encouraged to position themselves relative to the broad creative arc of the discipline, in order that they may emerge as advanced practitioners with a hand in shaping its central tenets, facilitating either professional migration/consolidation, or further research at PhD level. All GSA degree programmes are validated by the University of Glasgow.

Graduate destinations

Interior Design historically occurred in a hinterland loosely occupied by architects, shopfitters and decorators. It has only relatively recently begun to assert itself as a discreet profession, with trained practitioners and informed clients. As the practice has matured, the UK has become firmly established as one of its international centres, for both the practice, study and critique of the subject. The MDes in Interior Design is a logical extension of this context. It operates a subject-centred approach and aims to create advanced practitioners by acting as a bridge between the delineated and the uncharted. It provides the opportunity for deep exploration free from the confines of practice. It encourages investigation into emerging aspects of the discipline where ca
