Research Degrees at The Glasgow School of Art are offered at both Masters and Doctoral levels through our Master of Research and PhD programmes. As a research community, we create, embody, and respond to new developments in contemporary art, design, technology, and, architecture. Collaboration, experimentation, and impact are key to the vibrant and supportive environment where creative practice is nurtured and valued.
PhD programmes at the GSA are internationally recognised and central to the School’s research culture. PhD researchers are part of a close-knit, interdisciplinary research community within one of the world’s oldest and most renowned practice-led institutions.
There are two pathways for undertaking either a full-time or part-time PhD at the GSA – PhD based at the GSA and PhD by Distance by Learning. PhD researchers, whether on campus or distance learning, are supervised by specialist teams of academic staff who at practicing artists, designers, architects and innovators, as well as critics, writers and historians.
The Master of Research is a one year degree which provides students with the opportunity to design and undertake a discrete research project, either ‘by practice’ or ‘by Thesis’. You can study for the Master of Research at our campuses in Glasgow and the Highlands & Islands, and the programme is also offered as a low-residency blended programme split between digital and on campus learning.
