Visiting Glasgow
Glasgow is a vibrant, hospitable and creative city. No matter where you are, it’s always easy to get to good galleries, shops, bars, cafés, restaurants and creative spaces. With its great public transport, it is easy to get around Glasgow and to access different spaces and events in the city.
The Glasgow School of Art has its own guide to the city, which you can access here.
This guide features loads of creative projects and spaces in the city with a connection to the GSA, as well as a guide for students featuring some of the most popular places to eat, shop and visit compiled by our Students’ Association.
During Open House, the city will have a number of interesting exhibitions and events happening. Glasgow Art Map is a great, graduate-run initiative, which we recommend checking ahead of your visit, where you can find out about art and creative events happening in the city at any time. These Google Maps can help give you an insight into the city, especially some of the areas outside the City Centre and the West End that you may not be so familiar with.
Key exhibitions happening in the city during Open House include Ciara Philips at the Gallery of Modern Art; The Milky Way also at the Gallery of Modern Art; “Hospitality” a show for artists in the service industry curated by Stuck Collective at Fern Coffee Bar; exhibitions by Hayley Tompkins and Jesse Wine at the Modern Institute and Peng Zuqiang at the Common Guild. Take me Somewhere festival will also be taking place at Tramway.
Transport Links
Glasgow is connected to the north of Scotland and Edinburgh via Glasgow Queen Street Station, and the south of Scotland and the rest of the UK via Glasgow Central Station. Both of these stations are less than a 15-minute walk or a short taxi from the Garnethill Campus. Buchanan Bus Station is also a ten minute walk away.
If you are arriving via Glasgow airport, First Bus run an Airport Express which connects you to the city, but this will need to be pre-booked, while Citylink run a bookable shuttle from Glasgow to Edinburgh Airport.
