Programme overview
The Master of Design (MDes) in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design is a one-year practice- and research-led master’s that cultivates independent designers who challenge conventions and expand the boundaries of jewellery and metalwork. Studio learning is framed as a dynamic space where materials, processes, and ideas are explored through creative experimentation and critical reflection. Designed for those with prior experience in jewellery, silversmithing, or related disciplines, the programme builds on existing expertise while deepening engagement with design thinking, research, and craftsmanship. Supported by specialist workshops and expert staff, students examine the cultural, ethical, and environmental dimensions of adornment and object-making while developing a distinctive personal voice. Graduates emerge with a clear creative identity and the confidence to pursue independent practice, professional collaboration, or doctoral-level research in contemporary jewellery and silversmithing. All degree programmes are validated by the University of Glasgow.
