Programme overview

The PhD is a postgraduate research degree programme based in one of GSA’s four Schools: Fine Art, Design, Innovation and Technology, and Architecture, or through the Interdisciplinary Research centre. It is supervised by a Primary Supervisor and up to two additional co-supervisors, one of whom may be an academic in another institution, with approval from the GSA. The programme offers full or part-time study, with a degree typically completed after three years (full-time) or six years (part-time), with the option of a further extension year (one year full-time or two years part-time).

Distance students undertake their studies entirely remotely and participate fully in the GSA’s research culture through regular virtual supervision and engagement with online seminars, workshops, and events. While not a taught course, students benefit from regular supervision alongside a structured programme of researcher development. This includes training in research methods, academic writing, ethics, impact, and career development. Students are also encouraged to share and discuss their research through the GSA’s programme of seminars, symposia, and discipline-specific events. In addition to the GSA’s own provision, students have access to a wide range of external opportunities through the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH), of which the GSA is a member, and the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE).

The degree is validated by the University of Glasgow. PhD students also gain access to the University’s extensive library collections and online resources.
