I hold a BSc in Architectural Engineering and a PhD in Building Science, where my doctoral thesis examined the relationship between thermal performance, thermal comfort, and user satisfaction. My research spans two core areas: energy and thermal comfort in buildings, and design computation and cognition. I have published widely in international journals and conferences within these domains. A key contribution was the first systematic and empirical environmental appraisal of the Glasgow School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, published in Building and Environment (2002). I have also advanced research on creativity in architectural design. In collaboration with T. Barber, I developed measures of ideation fluency, variety, and originality, applying t-tests to assess changes in attitudes before and after CAD use. This work appeared in Design Studies (2001). Beyond research, I have made substantial contributions to doctoral training and examination. I have successfully supervised approximately 20 PhD students to completion and served as an external examiner for 17 PhD theses at various institutions.
