4 year programme
UCAS Code: H3WG (MEng)
5 Year programme
Advanced entry: Applicants who attain exceptional grades may be considered for Advanced Entry (commence their degree at year 2).

Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) with Honours or Masters of Engineering (MEng). All GSA degree programmes are validated by the University of Glasgow. Established in 1451, the University of Glasgow is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK research universities and a founder member of Universitas 21, an international grouping of universities dedicated to setting worldwide standards for higher education.

Studio-based, student-centred learning based around design project activities. Students have access to state-of-the-art product design engineering prototyping and manufacturing processes in the PDE workshops at GSA and University of Glasgow (GU)

4 years FT or 5 years

NOTE: this is a joint programme with the University of Glasgow and uses the university UCAS code. Click here for further details about this programme, including Advanced Entry, via the University of Glasgow

Indicative Additional Costs
Individual departments levy material fees as indicated on this page. You should budget for each year of your programme of study and should allow for costs over and above your fees and maintenance, particularly if expensive materials or projects are chosen.

Graduate Destinations include
Apple Computers, BAESystems, Cambridge Consultants, Dell, Dyson, Hoover-Candy, Jaguar-Land Rover, JCB, Nokia, Philips, Polaroid, Schlumberger, Terex and TomTom amongst others. PDE graduates have set up award winning companies in their own right. A number of these companies were funded on the success of projects that were developed whilst still undergraduates. The list continues to grow, but here are a few worth looking at: Filament, 4CDesign, CorePD, Fearsomengine, Safehinge, Speck Design and wylie3D

Programme Overview

Product Design Engineering or "PDE" brings together two cultures - the studio and creative environment of one of Europe's leading art schools - the GSA, and the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow - a world top 100 university (QS World Ranking).

If you can imagine bringing together your academic and creative abilities to design exciting and innovative products, then Product Design Engineering is the career path for you. PDE offer you a unique opportunity to gaining a Masters of Engineerng (MEng) or Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) with honours and a foundation for a career as a design engineer.

The basic underlying approach for PDE is 'core-explore'. The first three years of the studio programme at GSA are centred around core design project activities.  The curriculum is designed to develop creativity, exploration and expression of ideas, and to build confidence in applying the PDE design process. You will be involved in a wide range of activities including design awareness and aesthetics, drawing and visualisation, model-making and prototyping. Skills in communication and project management are also developed.

At GU the first three years of the course contain elements common to the Mechanical Engineering degree and include the following engineering core studies: applied mathematics, mechanics, thermofluids, materials, electrical and electronic engineering, management, economics, and foreign languages.

The final years of the degree focus on the exploration of the skills from the first three years and the application of in-depth technical skills. The format for this is usually represented through substantial design engineering projects.

Students are introduced to industry through placements and visits, and the final year involves an individual major project often organised in collaboration with industry. Contextual studies relate work to entrepreneurial, economic, business, and societal considerations.

Professional Status

PDE is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institute of Engineering Designers to allow Chartered Engineer status - an excellent springboard for industry, consultancy, or higher degrees.
